Gold Letter Events

  • “The Abbott” – is a perpetual trophy started in 1953. Joseph Henry Abbott is the son of Joseph Henry Abbott (Snr) who in 1853 founded the business, J H Abbott & Co. that is now known today as Abbott Supply. The original store supplied everyday essential items to those seeking their fortune on the goldfields.  In 1876, the leather business of T.Baulderstone was purchased, and operations were further expanded later by the acquisition of the Edinburgh Tannery at Sheepwash Creek, and The Edinburgh Leather & Grindery warehouse in Bull Street, Sandhurst. In 1889, Joseph Abbott passed all interests in the business to his son, who shared the same name, in partnership with an adopted son, Richard Hartley Smith Abbott.
  • The Harold Dean Knock-out (Golden Putter). The beauty and challenge of this event is to play six consecutive rounds of consistent good golf. The 16 best aggregate nett-stroke scores played over two consecutive rounds of golf (including the the monthly medal round) qualify for the match-play knock-out rounds. The knock-out rounds are played at the head of the normal Saturday afternoon competition and are played over four consecutive weeks. Hence, six weeks of consistent good golf is required to win the ‘Harold Dean’.

Harold Dean joined Eaglehawk Golf Club in 1945 and became a stalwart of the Club. He was elected to the Committee in 1949 and served on it continuously for 24 years until his retirement from the Committee in 1972. In 1951 he was elected as Treasurer and served in that position until 1972, a period of 22 years and he then became the Club Historian from 1973 to 1993 for a further 21 years. Harold was elected as an Honorary Life member in 1965 and after his retirement as treasurer, the Club inaugurated the Harold Dean Knock-Out in 1973 in recognition of his long period of service to the Club.

The first year was won by Jack Svanosio and the final year was won by Tony Jacobs in 2013. It was a gold letter event and the honour board went from 1973 to 1996. After that in 1997 the Club purchased a golden putter which was housed in a glass case and the winners names were then engraved on a small shield and installed along side of the putter. The gold putter now takes pride of place in the bottom lounge room.
